We flew SYD to LAX (14 hours) with both headsets. One gave us a headache. One let us sleep. Here is the breakdown.
The Contenders
- The Incumbent: Sony WH-1000XM5. The industry standard for ANC.
- The Challenger: Bose QuietComfort Ultra. The king of comfort.
Round 1: Noise Cancellation
Winner: Sony. The XM5 adapts to cabin pressure better. It erased the engine drone completely. Bose let a little high-pitch hiss through.
Round 2: Comfort
Winner: Bose. If you wear glasses, get the Bose. The clamping force is lower. After 4 hours, the Sony band created a “hot spot” on the crown of the head.
Round 3: Sleepability
Winner: Bose. The earcups are slightly shallower, meaning they don't push against the headrest as much when you turn your head.
The Verdict
If you want Absolute Silence for work: Get the Sony XM5.
If you want Sleep & Comfort (especially with glasses): Get the Bose QC Ultra.
